A piece of history

The Miguel Ortega Public Library was inaugurated on Saturday October 10, 1981 and was opened three days later. It takes that name in honor to Don Miguel Ortega Rueda, doctor of the locality. Don Miguel, as he is known by the elders of our town, was born in Almería in 1909, but he lived in La Mancha most of his childhood and childhood. He started working, very young, as a teacher in a nearby town.

When approving oppositions, it was destined to Bigastro, where it knew his wife, Doña Elisa. While he was teaching, he took the Doctor’s career for free. During the civil war he was practicing as a doctor, which gave him an important experience, and made him grow as a person and as a doctor. After the war was in the concentration camp of Albatera and the prison of the Seminary of Orihuela. After two years, he was granted freedom, but could no longer exercise a teacher or a doctor in public office.

It was for this, that he settled in Rojales, helped by the DR. José Ramos Quesada. Here he had to do everything: births, minor surgery, infectious diseases and even an autopsy … As Ophthalmology liked a lot, people came from the surrounding villages to be treated for eye diseases.
He worked 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and his consultation was open to all, without distinction. He worked in Rojales for 42 years, with very precarious means, but with a huge humanity. Don Miguel, according to the words of his daughter, Mrs. Elisa Ortega, felt RESPECTED, VALUED and LOVED by our town and our region.

As a summary of his life, his honesty and his good work as a person and as a doctor, we will say that the following epitaph is written on his tombstone: “M. Ortega, he did the good he could. ” As for the Library, the day of its inauguration, he donated the Bible of his house, which we still have and keep.

Initially, this library had 2073 volumes, donated by the then National Reading Center. The Library was installed in the old schools, there was a room for children and youth and another for adults, who communicated through an arch of free access. There was also a large patio, in which the bathrooms were located. Admission was free and their services were free. Its schedule was: Monday to Friday from 5 to 8 pm and Saturdays from 11 to 1 pm.

In order to take the books home, you had to get a library card. The adult card was red, and they did it from the age of 14. The child was yellow.

Finally, in the year 2000, the new Library was inaugurated, which was built on the site occupied by the old one. With contributions from the Provincial Council, the Generalitat Valenciana, private donations and purchase by the City Council, the Miguel Ortega Library has now 9800 registered volumes and a total of 2353 members.
